About Bivane Vallei Stud
According to legend, the name “Bivane” means “place of gathering” — it may also
mean “where the waters come together,” but both interpretations ring true for this
valley. Here, water most certainly gathers; springs from Elandsberg, the Bivane
(Pivaan) River, and even the source of the Pongola are all nearby.

Our dream is that the horses of the Bivane Valley will be able to live a natural life in
this green valley for many years to come, creating wonderful “gatherings” for family
and friends from their backs, while we continue to strive to preserve and promote the
nobility of the Boerperd.

The South African Boerperd carries deep family meaning for us. Hannelie’s love for the breed began with her grandfather Jan van der Wath at the old and renowned Lang-Carel stud.

The love for the SA Boerperd that she learned in those formative years laid the foundation for the values and approach that define Bivane Vallei today. Liesl Venter’s own childhood memories on this very same farm, Kempslust, in the Bivane Valley, shaped her fascination with a horse that is hardy, intelligent, and willing to work which eventually led her to the SA Boerperd and the dream of having her own stud.

It is therefore a privilege, through this partnership, to contribute to the continuation of this unique breed.

Lang-Carel Stud has had a profound influence on the birth and identity of Bivane
Vallei. Our entire foundation bloodstock originates from Lang-Carel, with most
individuals selected carefully for the establishment of our stud by Jan van der Wath,
owner of Lang-Carel Stud. This foundation offered more than proven genetics—it
carried forward a breeding philosophy grounded in correctness, functionality, and
long-term soundness.

Bivane Vallei was established as a continuation of this legacy, shaped by a new landscape but guided by the same principles. Our choice of the SA Boerperd was not incidental. It was the natural expression of a belief in a horse that belongs to this country that we love. Our aim has never been to reinvent the SA Boerperd, but to build carefully upon a foundation we trust.

Our Values
Stewardship lies at the heart of Bivane Vallei. We see ourselves as caretakers of the
land, of the horses in our care, and of the future of the SA Boerperd breed.

Every decision is made with long-term impact in mind.

Our horsemanship is guided by patience, and a shared knowledge of natural
horsemanship within our team. Horses are handled with respect and allowed the
time they need to develop physically and mentally. We believe that how a horse is
raised is as important as it’s pedigree.

At Bivane Vallei, we believe horses should be allowed to grow up as horses.
Youngstock are raised year-round in the veld within a stable herd environment, which
supports strong bone, sound feet, and natural physical development. Just as
importantly, this upbringing encourages physical confidence, social awareness, and
emotional steadiness. Horses raised this way tend to be adaptable, and well
prepared for the demands of training, work, and partnership.
We maintain our commitment to natural horsemanship even in breeding. During the
breeding season, a stallion is introduced to a carefully selected herd of mares. This
approach allows the horses to interact naturally, reducing stress and encouraging a
healthy, instinctive mating process.

Our Breeding Vision at Bivane Vallei
We aim to preserve the traditional character of the SA Boerperd while strengthening
its relevance as a modern working and competitive horse.
Soundness forms the foundation of our breeding program. Correct conformation,
strong bone, good feet, and mental steadiness are non-negotiable, as they support
longevity and versatility.

Movement is a defining focus at Bivane Vallei. We strive to preserve the Boerperd’s
distinctive buoyant, long-striding action driven by the hocks through the back, with a
medium–high knee lift that enhances balance, athletic ability, and rideability. This
natural movement contributes to the horse’s potential as a show horse while
remaining practical and efficient for everyday riding and work.

Stallions and mares are selected deliberately, with careful attention to the
contribution of the breed. Each foal bred at Bivane Vallei represents a
responsibility—not only to its future rider, but to the integrity of the SA Boerperd.
As the stud continues to grow, our commitment remains unchanged: to contribute
thoughtfully to the future of the breed and to produce horses that can be trusted as
working partners and competitive companions.
Those who visit or work with Bivane Vallei are invited into a way of thinking shaped
by patience, sustainability, and respect for the horse. The SA Boerperd has earned
its place through honesty and ability. Our role is to ensure those qualities are
preserved, strengthened, and passed on with care.
